Leave a map, not a mess.

Everything your family would need to find, in one book.

The Family File is a fill-in organizer that records where everything is and who to call if something happens to you. The accounts, the policies, the deed, the drawer of mystery keys. One afternoon gets you started, and the people you love never have to hunt.

Fillable PDF, $29. Printed book with your family's name on the cover, $59 with free US shipping, and the PDF comes with it.

How it works

When someone lands in the hospital or dies, the people closest to them can spend months looking for accounts, policies and paperwork. A Family File turns that search into a page number.

  1. Get it

Download the fillable PDF the minute you check out, or order the printed book with your family's name on the cover. The book comes with the PDF too.

PDFInstant downloadBookPrinted in 3–5 business days
  2. Fill it one file at a time

Start with the First Ten, the ten things your family would need first. Then take one numbered file per sitting, and skip anything that doesn't apply.

    • The First Ten Done
    • File 02, People to Call Done
    • File 03, Money Sunday
  3. Tell two people where it is

A map only helps if someone can find it. A page up front records who knows where your file lives, and when you told them.

Fourteen files. One place to look.

The Family File is organized like a records drawer: numbered files, one subject each. You write down what exists, where it's kept and who to call.

Up front: a note to your family, the First Ten, a one-page emergency sheet, and a page for who knows where this file is. In the back: an Annual Review with sign-off boxes for ten years, a change log and general resources. 112 pages in all.

What you never write down

  • Full Social Security numbers
  • Full account numbers
  • Passwords
  • PINs
  • Crypto seed phrases

The file asks where each thing is kept, plus the last four digits. We never see what you write. Your file lives on your paper or your own device.

More about the Family File

  1. File 01: About Me

Your details, your household, and where the birth certificate, passport, Social Security card and DD-214 are kept.

  2. File 02: People to Call

Who to call first, then family, close friends, your attorney, CPA, insurance agent, doctor, and the neighbor with a key.

  3. File 03: Money

Bank accounts, the 401(k) from your old job, credit cards, loans, the safe-deposit box. Last four digits only, never full numbers.

  4. File 04: Insurance

Life, health or Medicare, home, auto and the rest: the carrier, the agent, and where each policy is kept.

  5. File 05: Home & Property

Where the deed and car titles are, who services the mortgage, and where the water shutoff is.

  6. File 06: Bills & Subscriptions

What's on autopay, from which account, and what to keep paying or cancel.

  7. File 07: Digital Life

How to get into the phone, password manager emergency access, legacy contacts, and where the photos live.

  8. File 08: Taxes & Records

Who prepares your taxes and where past returns and important records are kept.

  9. File 09: Legal Documents Locator

Whether you have a will, trust or power of attorney, and where the originals are. A locator, not a form.

  10. File 10: Business Interests

If you own part of a business: your role, who can step in, and where the agreements are kept.

  11. File 11: Health & Care

Doctors, pharmacy, where the advance directive is, and your care preferences in your own words.

  12. File 12: Dependents & Pets

The kids' routines and doctors, adults who rely on you, and who should take the dog.

  13. File 13: Final Wishes

Service preferences, burial or cremation, any prepaid plans, and who to tell.

  14. File 14: Letters & Legacy

Letters to the people you love, your story, the family recipes, and the stories behind the heirlooms.

Giving it to your parents?

Send the printed book straight to them with a note from you, at no extra charge.

A gentle way in: fill in your own first, then offer to sit with them for the First Ten. It goes faster with two people and a pot of coffee, and it's easier to ask someone to do a thing you've already done.

Mom and Dad,

No rush on this. Could we do the first ten pages together when I'm home for Thanksgiving? I'll bring the pie.

Love, Sam

Questions people ask first

Short answers to the things most people want to know before they start.

All questions and answers

Do I write my passwords or account numbers in it?

No, and the file never asks you to. It never asks for full Social Security numbers, full account or policy numbers, passwords, PINs, security answers or crypto seed phrases. You write where each thing is kept, plus the last four digits so your family can tell accounts apart. For passwords, the file suggests turning on the emergency-access feature that many password managers offer.

Can Kin & Keep see what I write?

No. We never see what you write. Your file lives on your paper or your own device: the PDF is a file on your computer, and the book is a book. When you order, we collect only your name, email, shipping address and the name for the cover, plus a phone number for printed books, because the printer's carrier requires one for delivery.

Should I get the PDF or the printed book?

Get the PDF if you like to type, want to start tonight, or want to keep it on your computer. Get the book if you'd rather write by hand, want something your family can pull off a shelf, or are giving it as a gift. The book includes the PDF, so you don't have to choose forever.

How long does it take to fill in?

Plan on one afternoon for the First Ten, the ten things your family would need first. After that, take one numbered file per sitting, at whatever pace suits you. Nothing has to be finished in one go.
